Will your pendant fit your chain? Check the bail and end fittings

Start with the part the chain must pass through

A pendant can look right beside a chain and still be difficult to put on it. The small attachment at the top of the pendant is often called a bail. For a pendant that slides onto a chain, its inner opening needs to accommodate the end fitting that you will thread through it. The visible width of the chain is only one part of that comparison.

Before choosing a pendant for a necklace you own, lay the chain and its ends on a clear surface. Identify the end that would pass through the opening. Look at any end cap, connecting ring or tag attached to it, as well as the clasp. A slim chain can have a wider end fitting.

Ask for inside measurements, not the outside outline

The useful pendant measurement is the clear space inside the attachment, rather than the outside width of its metalwork. Ask for both the internal width and height when the opening is oval or otherwise shaped. Then ask for the dimensions of the chain end that needs to pass through it.

A single number does not describe every shape. For example, a listing that gives one bail measurement may leave the other dimension unstated. Do not treat two equal numbers as a guaranteed fit: the shape and thickness of the fitting also matter. Ask the seller to confirm compatibility for the exact pendant and chain if the measurements leave doubt.

The stated 6mm opening is useful information, but the description does not give two internal dimensions or establish a match with every chain under 6mm wide. Confirm the particular chain’s end fittings before choosing the pair.
